Learning through play is a vital part of childhood. Babies start learning as soon as they open their eyes and ears and for around two years after they are born they learn primarily through their senses as they focus on what they can see, smell, hear, touch and taste. Life is a series of exciting new discoveries for young children. Parents looking for safe, engaging and entertaining toys for young children need look no further than our selection of baby and toddler toys.
Shape sorting toys are always popular with children who love the challenge of working out how to fit wooden blocks on top of or next to each other or even through a particular hole or gap. These toys encourage the development and improvement of fine motor skills as babies use their fingers and hands for grasping and gripping.
Baby Walkers, on the other hand, promote the enhancement of gross motor skills as they encourage children to use their muscles in their back, shoulders, arms and legs to stand up, balance and walk with the aid of a walker. Our brilliant selection includes the magnificent Tidlo Activity Walker which we are giving away in our weekly Wooden Wednesday competition.*
Building and stacking toys are always popular with children who always enjoy stacking wooden blocks and shapes into a teetering tower which inevitably topples to much laughter and smiling. While having so much fun, babies and toddlers are also learning how shapes fit together and about balance. They are also developing cognitive thinking as they think about how to fit shapes together, remember why they fell over last time and plan a new arrangement of shapes and blocks.
Wooden puzzles are a perfect match for our innate curiosity and willingness to learn. Some puzzles, like the Melissa and Doug Basic Skills Board, teach children specific skills, in this case, how to use a zips, buttons, laces and buckles. Other puzzles, such as bead mazes and shape sorters encourage kids to develop and improve more generic skills as previously highlighted.

Congratulations to Melanie Daniels who has won this week’s competition. Melanie’s name was selected at random from a list of correct entries. Due to a system error yesterday we accepted 36 and 35 as correct entries (one of our products was removed from our Shape Sorters section by mistake yesterday afternoon, meaning that we had 36 and then 35 products within the section).
Thank you to every else who entered and better luck next time!
