The world famous Flying Scotsman completed the first non-stop train journey between London and Edinburgh in May 1928 and in 1934 it became the first steam locomotive to reach an authenticated speed of 100mph. Firmly ensconced in the nation’s affection, Flying Scotsman was acquired by the National Railway Museum in York in 2004 and it is hoped that a thorough restoration will be completed in 2011 when the engine will once again return to service.
