The WoodenToyShop Guide to Wooden Train Track

Melissa and Doug Multi Activity Play Table

It is easy to understand why wooden train sets are among the most popular wooden toys chosen as presents at WoodenToyShop.co.uk. Many adults fondly remember their own wooden train and how they spent hours ‘choo-chooing’ around the track, passing over and under bridges, through tunnels and stations, stopping at little level crossings to let livestock and traffic pass and blowing their toy train whistles as often as harassed grownups would allow. Children love building track layouts, which would explain one of the most common questions that we are asked by customers: which sets of extra track can we use to expand our train set? We hope that this WoodenToyShop Guide to Wooden Train Track will be helpful to anyone who wishes to add even more excitement and adventure to their set.

BigJigs Rail Wooden Train Track Expansion Set

All wooden train sets and wooden train track sold at WoodenToyShop are interchangeable. Simply put, this means you can add your Brio and your BigJigs to your John Crane and Melissa and Doug train set. All of our sets use the Vario system to connect one piece to another, so all of our wooden train track will fit together. We recommend the following sets for your consideration:

1. Expansion sets: perhaps the most cost effective way to extend your track, expansion sets such as the BigJigs Wooden Train Track Expansion Set (25 pieces) or the Brio Beginner Expansion Set include long and short straight pieces, curves, end points, crossing points, switchers and other very useful pieces. (Check each set before buying to ensure you get exactly what you need.)

2. Bridges: along with separate pieces like the Ascender and Descender Track which allow you to raise and lower the level of your track, we offer you High Level Blocks which can be placed under your track as it heads towards something like the brilliant BigJigs Rail Double Suspension Bridge. Of course, you may prefer to build your own bridge with the BigJigs Bridge Expansion Set or the High Level Expansion Set. Harry Potter fans might like the BigJigs Railway Viaduct which reminds us of the Hogwarts Express taking Harry, Hermione and Ron to school for a new term.

3. Tunnels: two of our most popular wooden train accessories are the colourful BigJigs Red Brick Tunnel and the Double Tunnel which allows two separate lines of track to pass at the same time. (These handy Track Splitters will help you divide your track and create two routes.)

4. Stations and buildings: it is always fun to add another station or a terminus to your railway set. One of our most popular is the BigJigs Grand Central Station which features turnstiles, three platforms, a car park with ramp and wooden cars, a working lift, helipad and helicopter and a departure board. If you are lucky enough to have some track splitters, you will be able to have up to four trains in the station at once! Junior train drivers will also enjoy the Five Way Engine Shed and the fantastic Rail Signal Box which has a working level crossing and signal box with barrier.

5. Accessories such as the BigJigs Rail Lifting Bridge, the Big Yellow Crane and the ever popular Train Whistle are always popular stocking fillers and birthday presents.

We may not look after as many stations and as much track as Network Rail, but if your train stops at WoodenToyShop, we are sure you will find something suitable to make your children find their next wooden railway journey even more fun.
