Brio Trains Guide

I have to pinch myself some days. How can I complain about being at work when occasionally I get to extol the virtues of classic wooden toys such as Brio Trains?
Brio is a company with a long and proud history. Originally founded in the 1880s by Swedish basket maker Ivar Bengtsson, the company started selling wooden toys in 1907 and has been delighting and enchanting generations of children ever since. Although Brio’s train range from beautiful stacking toys and wooden blocks for babies through pull along toys to wooden kitchens, it is perhaps the absolutely wonderful wooden railway systems that Brio is now most famous for.
Here at WoodenToyShop we’re lucky enough to be able to stock a range of Brio wooden railway sets including the brilliant Brio Travel Switching Set, the Gold Mountain Train Set and of course some fantastic starter railway sets such as the Brio My First Railway Set, the Fun on the Farm Starter set and the Travel Circle Train Set.

One of the most enjoyable things about owning a wooden train set is that you can always add new engines, track and landscape, so for all the train lovers out there, we’ve put together a guide to our favourite Brio trains.
First out of the station is the ever popular Brio Classic Engine. Priced at only £5.95*, this beautiful little wooden train is a perfect addition to any wooden train set and is just the right size for the small hands of junior drivers who love manoeuvring trains around the track. Its magnetic rear couplings mean that it will connect with other wagons and engines.

Why

The Brio Old Steam Engine is another pocket-sized classic wooden train that will thrill youngsters with its vibrant black, red and yellow paint. The moving pistons give this engine added authenticity and we think grandparents will particularly enjoy this one.

What

Next up is the Brio Speedy Bullet Train which mixes modern train technology with the age of steam. This gleaming silver bullet is guaranteed to be a favourite, given its aerodynamic design and detachable coal tender.

More nostalgic train lovers will adore the Brio Flying Scotsman Engine which will take you back to the golden age of steam locomotive competing to be the fastest of all. The Flying Scotsman was the first steam loco to reach an official speed of 100 miles per hour and while this wooden version may not quite match the real thing for speed, we are sure it will draw gasps from all who witness it racing around your wooden track.

Our final favourites in this mini guide to Brio trains are the Brio Mighty Red Action Locomotive and the Big Green Action Locomotive, both of which are battery operated engines with manual buttons for switching between forward and reverse movement, working headlights and authentic engine sounds. If you are looking for something extra special for someone who already has a fantastic wooden railway system, either of these colourful crackers will add another element of fun to their train set.
