John Crane ABC Board

As the summer holidays finally come to an end and as parents across the land look forward to the peace and quiet that September brings, here at WoodenToyShop we have been remembering our first days at school all those years ago and putting our minds to recommending some toys that will help Mums and Dads teach their children some basic numbers and letters as well as one or two other things that may help the little ones get a head start when they go into school for the first time.

Many young children seem to have an insatiable appetite for learning. They love copying the grownups and are eager to learn as much as they possibly can. One of the first things children learn formally is the alphabet. There are many tools available to help parents and adults to teach children the alphabet, not least wooden alphabet blocks such as these brilliant BigJigs ABC Wooden Blocks. Children from around 12 months old will enjoy playing with grownups or brothers and sisters as they learn the letter on each block, as well as the colour of each block. And of course, later on the blocks can be used to spell simple names and words.

Slightly older children will enjoy the Melissa and Doug See and Spell which is a perennial favourite with our customers. This deceptively simple toy teaches children to spell basic words with a combination of easy-to-recognise images, colourful wooden letters and space to spell out the word next to the image on a wooden board.Melissa and Doug See and Spell

Whatever your son or daughter’s age, we’re sure you will find a suitably enjoyable and educational toy amongst our selection of wooden letters.

Learning basic numbers is fun with any one of our sets of wooden numbers, such as the John Crane Tidlo Magnetic Numbers. These colourful wooden numbers and mathematical symbols will help children learn numbers and simple mathematics, either at the table, on the floor or with a magnetic white board. The BigJigs Learn to Count is another popular toy which combines learning and fun while encouraging kids to learn concentration skills and improve their hand eye coordination as they count out the coloured discs to match the corresponding numbers.

We take so many things for granted as adults, not least knowing how to tell the time. Learning how to tell the time is a rite of passage for most children and despite the predominance of digital clocks and watches, most parents and adults prefer to teach their children how to read an analogue clock face. The Melissa and Doug Shape Sorting Clock is an excellent introduction to this basic life skill. Its shape sorter numbers will teach children how to read the hours on a clock and the internal clock will help them learn about seconds.Melissa and Doug Shape Sorting Clock

Having mastered the art of telling the time, children will be keen to learn the days of the week and the months of the year. The wonderful BigJigs Calendar Board is a fantastic learning toy, which features a 1-31 peg board and monthly peg board, a clock, days of the week which can be selected by a rotating arrow, a season selector and a basic weather chart. This is a particularly useful educational toy, as it can be used every day to learn the day, date, time and weather conditions.
