When someone thinks of wooden toys, one of the first toys that spring to mind is the wooden dolls house. There’s just something about them; they not only look great and remind parents and grandparents of their own childhoods, but they also offer children a wonderful opportunity to escape into their own make-believe world and lose themselves in their imaginations. They really are a timeless toy for all children and luckily there are some lovely models available to suit all budgets.
So, if you’re house hunting, let’s have a quick look at what’s on the market.
Anyone
At the top of the price range we have the Le Toy Van Mayberry Manor which is one of the finest wooden dolls houses you can buy.
This beautiful three storey dolls house is tastefully decorated and with its wonderful window boxes and front garden so is a gardener’s delight. It has a splendid front door, elegant bay windows and measures 61cm wide, 69cm high and 37cm deep so it will take pride of place in any playroom, bedroom or nursery. It comes flat packed but is probably one of the easiest dolls houses to assemble. It’s very clever in that the frame fits neatly together and is all held in place by slotting the window boxes into place. The author of this actually bought one of these beauties for his daughter recently and assembled it in 10 minutes. Please note that Mayberry Manor is unfurnished but we also sell a wide variety of dolls house furniture and wooden dolls which fit it perfectly.
Also available in the top of the range bracket is BigJigs Rose Cottage. Now BigJigs are famous for their quality children’s wooden toys and this one doesn’t disappoint.
Gorgeous!
This chocolate box cottage is slightly more expensive than the Mayberry Manor but it comes complete with furniture so is a little bit of a bargain. It has five rooms: a fully fitted kitchen/diner, a comfortable lounge suite, a beautifully appointed bathroom and of course the master bedroom suite. There is also a very handy attic space for storage or perhaps an extra bedroom for sleepovers. All rooms are sumptuously appointed and the house even comes with its own family of dolls, including a pet dog. For someone looking for a fully furnished first time buy, then we cannot recommend this highly enough. Measurements are 56cm wide, 60cm high and 31cm deep.
If you are in the market for a dolls house with furniture, it’s also worth a look at the Melissa and Doug dolls house which has 19 pieces of furniture and is a very grand old pile indeed.
Very
Again, it’s three stories high and sets itself apart from its peers by offering a very grand double front door, two moveable staircases and a lovely pair of balconies on the first and second floor main bedrooms. It’s also painted in a bright pink, lavender and purple combination and is very easy on the eye. Its’ vital statistics are 72cm wide, 72cm high and 40cm deep.
Slightly lower down the range come some real crackers from Le Toy Van. They include Sophie’s House, Lavender House, Appleby House and Bay Tree House. They are all of similar size and come unfurnished but can be furnished with the utterly gorgeous Daisy Lane Furniture.

One
It is slightly smaller than the aforementioned Mayberry Manor, measuring 61cm wide, 67cm high and 35cm deep but it’s still a dream home for any child and their doll family. As with Mayberry Manor, it’s very easy to assemble and has the trademark Le Toy Van window boxes and some lovely window shutters which give it a very continental feel. The grand front door opens to an equally grand central staircase and the house is decorated very tastefully throughout. This will make a lovely home for some very special dollies, teddies or let’s face it, anyone.

Fully
Recently restyled, this delightful daisy themed dolls house comes in a resplendent pink and has the unique circular daisy window in the roof, to the front. It has two floors and comes complete with a Daisy Lane Starter Furniture Set which means it’s good to go from the moment it’s opened. Being of a smaller size (it measures 44cm wide, 42.5cm high and 35cm deep), it’s much more suitable for limited spaces and can even be folded up and taken on holiday. It’s a truly lovely doll house and as it’s made by one of the premier wooden toy brands out there, Le Toy Van, is a house which could easily be passed to the next generation.
Another option to consider in the mid-sized dolls house category is the John Crane Little Cottage. As can be seen from the image below, it’s slightly different to the other dolls houses we sell in that is has a much more modern feel to it:
Compact,
The cottage comes complete with furniture and a Mummy and Daddy doll set. As well as the indoor furniture, the John Crane Little Cottage also has a small front garden with an apple tree, a garden bench, a pale and a watering can. This house has a very airy feel to it and would suit someone who just loves the outdoors.
Finally we come to our smallest wooden dolls house and that is the Melissa and Doug Fold and Go Dolls House. It may be smaller, measuring 34cm wide, 27cm high and 16cm deep but it has an added advantage. It can be easily folded up and carried using the carry handle on top so that children can take it on holiday, take it to friends, to Granny and Grandad’s – the possibilities are endless.
Have
As well as it being portable and therefore very convenient to carry around and to store, it’s also very pleasing on the eye. It has a pink finish with a lovely slate roof and comes complete with window shutters and a rather lovely chimney which makes us imagine the dolls (included) and their friends snuggling up on the sofa in front of a roaring fire after a long day’s play. The house has four rooms, all fully furnished and has the trademark quality that all Melissa & Doug toys possess.
