When Thomas received the BigJigs Town and Country Train Set he was so excited. He had wanted a train set for a while and now we had the chance to review one which meant lots of playing about with it.

Unpacking from the box was like a never ending job, more and more pieces - such great value for the amount you get. Train Station, post office, police station, houses and even a boat all included with the track to make it like its own little village with even the addition of assorted trees to make it extra special. It even includes various characters although they are bigger than the cars and train. Each piece is of very good quality and very solid so there will be no breakages. An extra advantage being that this set has the ability to expand as you can buy expansion sets and it will also fit together with most other brands or train sets.

Packaging

Finding all the correct pieces and putting it together was quite a job as there were a lot of different little pieces but I always think that putting it together is half the fun and we enjoyed our time working it out, it also helps Thomas with his co-ordination, working out which pieces go where. Eventually we got it all up and I was expecting it to be so big. It includes a raised bridge section on the outside track and a figure of eight track on the inside which has a cross section in the middle and a level crossing.

 Layout

I love the fact that the train is magnetic so easily connects with no fiddly bits to conquer. Pushing it around the track is smooth and as all the pieces of the track fit together snuggly there are no bumps in the track.

 Overhead

Thomas’s favourite bit was the raised bridge as he could push the train up it and then let it go down the other side on its own, each time trying to get it to go faster and faster until it crashed off the track. He usually has a tendency to throw things but I think as this kept his mind occupied he just enjoyed playing with it and didn’t feel the need to throw pieces. Thomas also enjoyed the level crossing as it meant he had to stop the train and close the gates to let the cars and busses through and the reopen the gates to let the train proceed. This also came with a few road accidents as with Thomas been a 3 year old boy he enjoyed it when the vehicles collided.

 Playing

The only bad part was tidy up time. Thomas loved the set so much that he didn’t want to put it away and would happily play with it all day. I would definitely say that this train set is fun as well as mentally stimulating. All the different pieces meant Thomas never ran out of parts to play with and was constantly moving and was kept a very happy boy.
